How to make an Oracle APEX app icon

  1. Choose an icon. Search the Font APEX catalogue of 1,160 icons in the small (16 × 16 grid) or large (32 × 32 grid) set.
  2. Style it. Set the foreground and background colours using hex values or CSS colour names, or make the background transparent.
  3. Position it. Rotate, zoom and offset the artwork. The background stays fixed, and offsets are measured in SVG viewBox units.
  4. Check every size. The previews show all five outputs, with transparency on a checkerboard that is never exported.
  5. Download. Select Download ZIP to save app-icons.zip.

What’s in app-icons.zip

The archive contains exactly these five PNG files, each rendered separately from the vector icon at its own size:

FileSize (pixels)Corners
icons/app-icon-32.png32 × 32Square
icons/app-icon-144-rounded.png144 × 144Rounded (transparent outside)
icons/app-icon-192.png192 × 192Square
icons/app-icon-256-rounded.png256 × 256Rounded (transparent outside)
icons/app-icon-512.png512 × 512Square

Rounded variants use a corner radius of one tenth of the image width. Nothing else is added to the ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Font APEX App Icon Builder?

A free web tool that creates Oracle APEX application icons from the 1,160 icons in Oracle's open-source Font APEX library. You style an icon and download a ZIP containing the five PNG sizes an APEX app uses.

Which files are in app-icons.zip?

Exactly five PNG files inside an icons/ folder: app-icon-32.png (32 × 32), app-icon-144-rounded.png (144 × 144, rounded corners), app-icon-192.png (192 × 192), app-icon-256-rounded.png (256 × 256, rounded corners) and app-icon-512.png (512 × 512).

How do I add the icons to an Oracle APEX application?

In your application open Shared Components → Static Application Files → Create File, upload app-icons.zip and retain the icons/ directory structure. Verify the result in your target APEX version, because import behaviour can differ between releases.

Are my icons uploaded to a server?

No. The icon is rendered with the browser Canvas API and the ZIP is built in your browser; your icons never leave your device. The site has no backend, accounts or cookies. It uses Cabin, a cookie-free, privacy-friendly analytics service, to count anonymous page visits.

What is the difference between the small and large icon sets?

Font APEX draws every icon twice: the small set on a 16 × 16 grid, suited to simple, bold shapes, and the large set on a 32 × 32 grid with more detail. Both sets contain the same icon names.

Which colours can I use?

Any hex colour (#rgb, #rgba, #rrggbb or #rrggbbaa) or CSS colour name such as hotpink or navy, for both the icon and the background. You can also make the background transparent.

What do the rotation, zoom and offset settings do?

They move only the icon artwork; the background stays fixed. Rotation and zoom pivot on the centre of the icon. Offsets are measured in SVG viewBox units (16 per icon width in the small set, 32 in the large set), not output pixels.

Why are the 144 and 256 pixel icons rounded?

Those two variants are generated with rounded corners using a radius of one tenth of the image width (14 and 25 pixels). The area outside the corners is transparent.

Is the tool free, and how is Font APEX licensed?

The tool is free to use. Oracle releases Font APEX under two licences: the icons and code under the MIT License, and the font files under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. This tool uses only the SVG icons, so the MIT License applies to them. The full licence text is linked at the bottom of this page.
